Word Craft: The Call to Write
From an early age I have always wanted to write, and I find myself taken by speculative fiction most of all. Each genre has its merit, but Fantasy and Science Fiction offers something much, much more. I enjoy the world-building aspect that these two genres offer to the writer. When you have the ability to world-build you inject a piece of yourself into that world. It is your child, your own flesh and blood that you raise from infancy into adulthood.
Yep, I have a mommy complex, but only when it comes to writing.
Like anybody that aspires to create a piece of literary art, I draw my inspiration from the world around me and the experiences that I am privy to. Anime and Manga is huge influence, as is more classic speculative fiction, but I also draw from an unusual upbringing where my family moved around a lot. I got to see a bunch of different places and meet a bunch of strange characters throughout this time. I only wished that I'd taken note of the many places and the faces.
Then again, I was like eight years old at the time, so I didn't understand the value of people watching or note-taking for the use in writing. I've learned a lot since then, and have to say that I am still being educated in the ways of storytelling. Reading has played an important part in my growth as not only a writer, but as a human being. Reading teaches us how to express what we're thinking, and how organize our thoughts. We learn about different worlds and different cultures, and the lessons that they can teach us.
